Western Days is an annual event that is held in the Village of Christopher Lake at the beginning of August. It’s a fun filled day that gets the entire community involved in the good times. All you have to do is be there! The events and activities are sponsored by local businesses and organizations, and it’s just about all for the kids. The Waskesiu Wilderness Region played a huge part this year by sponsoring the pony rides, petting zoo, and much more. It was such a treat!
The day started with a Pancake Breakfast put on by the Lions, and a bustling trade show, both located at the legion hall. Then at 11am begins the much anticipated Western Days Parade! It goes right down Main Street in the village, and every year the parade gets bigger and more impressive. People went all out with some of their floats – it was a great time for everyone. Be there by 11 to see it all. Kids can even be a part of it by decorating their bicycles and being IN the parade. I did this as a child on multiple occasions, now they even have a bike decoration contest art Affinity Credit Union after the parade. Trust me when I say it’s not a bad idea to practice riding with one hand and waving at the same time before the parade starts. There are lots of other ways to get involved, if you have your own float idea just show up and be in the line around 10:30am.
After the parade is done the real fun begins. Take a walk with your kids around the Village and take part in all the fun activities available to you. One of the best things is that it’s free! This is an opportunity for our community to say thank you to all the people that support us in the Lakeland area. So be sure to come and take advantage of this festive day, make it part of your tradition like so many others already have. Many of the activities are found in the village’s park, such as the petting zoo, pony rides, wagon rides, laser tag, and a balloon twister!
Businesses set up fun things to do around the village, such as; frisbee golf, fish ponds, face painting and art, Arizona Golf, egg toss, ring toss, Washoos and even some impressive and very temping bouncy castles. There will even be a display and sale by local artists in front of Lake Country Cottage Restaurant. You also don’t want to miss your chance to get someone wet in the dunk tank! Some local community members agree to take turns sitting on the cold pedestal that is the dunk tank, all for your pleasure of making the attempt to hit the target and get them down in the drink. In fact, I myself have spent some time on the dunk tank throne, and it’s actually more fun than it might sound!
This year there was a magic show held at the Legion hall at 7pm. Magic Roger Boucher entertained and amazed, drawing us into our final event for the evening, fireworks. On Western Days at dusk we have found a tradition of having a spectacular fireworks show right in the Village of Christopher Lake. They are launched from the Gallery Motel, and best watched from the front yard of Lake Country Cottage where glow sticks are handed out to the kids. These fireworks are another magnificent example of what can happen when an entire community pitches in together. A magical day like this really couldn’t find a better ending.
